Can I have a EV charger at my home?

As long as you have dedicated off-street parking you can have a EV charger installed.

If you live in an apartment with dedicated off-street parking, Landlord and other permissions will be required before a installation.

What power rating do I need?

Domestic EV Chargers are commonly available in two different power ratings.

  • 3.6kW Can provide up to 15 miles of range per hour
  • 7kW    Can provide up to 30 miles of range per hour

EV Charges ranging from 22kW – 350kW+ (rapid chargers) are available. However, require “3 phases” and these are mainly found on commercial or industrial site’s e.g. Supermarkets or work places.

How long will it take to charge my car?

There are a number of factors that can effect charging times, such as the “maximum charging rate” the car battery will allow, power rating of the charger and ambient temperature etc.

The examples below are estimated times based on a mid-sized vehicle from 0% – 100% full battery

3.6kW  would take around 22 hours

7kW     would take around 12 hours

22kW   would take around 8 hours

What type of cable do I need?

Two types are available

  • Tethered – means your EV charging cable is permanently attached to your EV charger.
  • Non Tethered – means your EV charging cable is detachable from your EV charger.

Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. We will run through these with you.

What type of plug do I need?

Think of the connector/plug like a mobile phone charger. The connector you need will be based on the car you have.

There are currently two available for home charging.

  • Type 1  – is capable of charging from 3.6kW up to 7.7kW
  • Type 2 – is capable of charging from 3.6kW up to 43kW

The most common type tends to be Type 2, however it is best to check your car owners manual.
